Employment Status: Full-time, At-Will, "Exempt" position, included in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP).

Work Schedule: Generally, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm (some evenings and weekends required).

The College of Arts & Letters (CAL) at California State University, San Bernardino is a dynamic and caring community of students, faculty, and staff members united by a passion for the arts and humanities. Typical Activities
Job Summary:
The Associate Dean reports to and works closely with the Dean of the College of Arts & Letters to carry out a smooth, efficient, and effective college operation. The Associate Dean provides leadership and oversight for enrollment management, program quality, academic scheduling, facilities planning and management, and university relations. The Associate Dean supervises the College IT staff members and the Professional Advisors, and plays an important role to help ensure compliance with policies and procedures, coordination and implementation of initiatives to meet the mission and values of the College and University, assists with confidential issues that arise, and serves in the Dean's capacity in the absence of the Dean.

Additional description of responsibilities:

  • Program & Leadership Support: Support the Dean in all aspects of program and leadership: Assist with the strategic planning and implementation of College and University objectives; Assist with the management of College programs, operations, monitor classroom space and coordinate and prioritize minor facilities and capital requests; Attend Chairs Council meetings, lead the College Curriculum Committee and Professional Awards Committee, and represent the College in various meetings and committees; Lead CAL faculty writing retreat group, if available; Monthly and term reports in collaboration with Dean, Communication Specialist and Dean's Executive Assistant; Enhance faculty success by leading various academic events and initiatives.
  • Academic Scheduling: Monitor and manage faculty course load and course scheduling of all departments and programs, including summer school and PDC offerings; Coordinate with CEGE and PDC; Coordinate college-wide assessment efforts, assist with the scheduling, staffing and evaluation of HUM/CAL classes, meeting with faculty and students as needed; Troubleshoot Liberal Studies programs and courses, as needed; Monitor and manage course enrollments per minimum class and large class guidelines; Establish annual and semester FTES targets for departments; Work with department chairs and coordinators to ensure faculty send in book orders and final grades in a timely manner.
  • Budget Administration: Prepare and determine lecturer (part-time) funding allocation to departments; Prepare and determine supplies and services allocations to departments; Consider and prioritize equipment purchases for departments; Coordinate and prioritize Vital Technology proposals and Minor Capital funding requests.
  • Student Success: Oversee aspects of student success in the college such as grade grievances and other student issues or complaints; Serve on the Student Success Committee; Ensure that college is on track to meet the GI2025 goals and targets; Assist student recruitment and enhance student timely graduation; Handle student complaints and academic grievances.


Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
  • A terminal degree in one of the disciplines in the College.
  • Ph.D. preferred and at least two (2) years of administrative experience as a department chair or equivalent position.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with academic advising, curriculum, assessment, implementation of the strategic plan, initiatives for the success of faculty and student, and management in complex organizations.
  • Experience with curriculum assessment.
  • Experience as a Tenured Full Professor is preferred.
