The Office of Strategic Initiatives and the Clinical Lab Development Program are seeking an Associate Director for Strategic Initiatives. This person would assist both units and would be responsible for assisting with business operations and functions including finance, accounting, project management reporting, resource allocation and other business matters. This is a hybrid position. Staff currently work in the office one day per week, subject to change as needed. A monthly team meeting is also held in Chicago or Champaign, alternating between locations each month.


Additional responsibilities include:

  • Serve as primary liaison to various campus units and administrative offices such as System Purchasing, Contracting, Payables, Legal, and Finance to initiate and manage ongoing OSI projects and initiatives.
  • Provide leadership in implementing and executing strategic initiatives on behalf of the Associate Vice President of OSI. Coordinate the development of strategic goals for and support efforts to align operational goals with the broader strategic plan.
  • Act as the business, finance, and liaison between OSI and the office's vendors, partners, and stakeholders including other University units and State government entities.
  • Responsible to oversee, manage unit's budget and analyze/report on actual spend. Manage Unit's Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable through timely outbound invoicing, facilitating proper Vendor billing in accordance with University systems and policies and regular tracking of open balances.
  • Complete monthly fund reconciliation, ensuring all transactions are legitimate and have the proper supporting documentation.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports for upper management, which includes analyzing those reports for reasonableness, identifying variances between reporting periods, and communicating those findings to management.
  • Prepare mandatory reports as required by University Accounting and Financial Reporting. This includes but is not limited to fiscal year-end fact sheet, UBIT, FCIAA, etc., and perform adjustments.
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and interpretation of operational policies and procedures relative to the business and/or fiscal operations of the unit.
  • Collect, analyze and report on data and information relevant to issues to the Associate Vice President and develop recommendations. Respond to request for information from other offices.
  • Ensure compliance with University, government, or industry regulatory guidelines relative to the business and/or fiscal operations of the unit.
  • Establish and maintain new funds.
  • Assist management with ad hoc reporting related to operations.
  • Perform other accounting duties, such as journal voucher processing, maintaining files that are used to support the unit's financial information (e.g., keeping track of receivables data)
  • Assist in reviewing existing affiliation agreements and contracts.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Accountancy, Business Administration or a field related to the position.

Knowledge and Experience:
  • Analytical skills to perform complex financial analysis of business transactions within a higher education setting and the ability to enforce various applicable policies and regulations while still providing superior customer service.
  • Attention to detail which can be utilized when analyzing financial information.
  • Ability to propose policies/procedures that improve and/or maintain the effectiveness of daily financial operations.
  • Demonstrated research, analytical, and organizational skills; experience in guiding/managing a project from concept to completion and ability to implement projects within timelines and budgets.
  • Excellent relationship building skills and ability to work collaboratively as part of an effective administrative team to reach goals and make decisions.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills to effectively present information and respond to requests for guidance and/or clarification.
  • Ability to address and resolve challenging accounting issues and strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to multi-task and produce accurate, detail-oriented work to meet stringent deadlines; creativity in problem-solving and exercising independent judgment and discretion.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Project management skills.
  • Proficient computer skills and advanced knowledge of applicable computer systems. This would include advanced skills in Microsoft Office products such as Excel, Outlook, Access, and Word as well as a detailed working knowledge of how to operate within the Banner finance module.
  • Ability to travel to Chicago or Champaign for monthly meetings approximately 10% or less.

    Preferred

    Master's in Accountancy, Business Administration, or a field related to the position.
