Marketing and Communications at Southeast Missouri State University seeks a creative and efficient storyteller with strong journalistic instincts who can craft compelling content for a variety of externally and internally focused publications. The communications coordinator is responsible for developing a clear strategy for inspiring and engaging the audience and compellingly communicating the brand story across channels. The coordinator then measures and analyzes results and engagement to refine what's working and what isn't with regard to the brand's content marketing efforts.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Write and distribute media releases using industry-specific platforms and serve as liaison with media professionals to promote Southeast's stories and manage requests
  • Write effective email marketing content, including e-newsletters, automated communication workflows, and SMS, that guides users through defined journeys and results in marketing conversions
  • Develop compelling stories and messages that attract and grow a digital audience on communications platforms and publications such as SEMO News, The Dome, and the SEMO Blog while following brand standards and communication style guidelines
  • Develop and execute strategies to reach the media, internal audiences, general public and target audiences across various outlets
  • Work closely with key stakeholders within the University's colleges, divisions, and departments to develop communications that strategically target audiences, including prospective students, parents, alumni, and media
  • Develop emergency communications and campus notifications and distribute through various platforms and assist in serving as media contact during crisis communications
  • Supervise, edit, and mentor a team of student and graduate assistant writers and manage a busy production schedule
  • Assist in media interview preparation and drafting speaking points for members of the University team
  • Write and create effective landing pages as well as provide metadata, such as keywords and short descriptions, to accompany content and improve search engine optimization
  • Monitor and analyze key metrics to improve communications and performance
  • Assist in the planning and execution of event marketing and necessary communications
  • Enthusiastically collaborate with team members to achieve University goals and create effective campaigns


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in advertising, communications, English, journalism, marketing, public relations, or related field (Summer 2022 graduates will be accepted).
  • Demonstrated experience at cross-platform writing for compelling stories and brand voice, including media releases and feature writing
  • Solid understanding of marketing and media channels, content best practices including APStyle, and how to strategize and message effectively
  • An impeccable eye for detail, proofreading and editing skills, and ability to consistently meet deadlines
  • Collaborative working style with a focus on building relationships across teams and with media partners
  • Experience working with Creative Suite as well as content management systems and media monitoring platforms
  • Excellent creative, communication, organizational, and idea generation skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse work environment, including working with multi-cultural populations and an understanding of, and sensitivity to, issues affecting women and minorities
